Creating a Daily Habit Log

In today’s Marketing & Mindset Video Tip I’d like to talk about creating a Daily Habit Log. What do I mean by this?

For many of us, we often struggle doing new things. For example, getting on a diet, blogging weekly, following up with people, etc. And this can be a challenge because these things we want to take on have not become a habit.

We are driven mostly on a day-to-day basis by our automatic way of  Being. These are pre-programmed ways of doing things that we do day in and day out.  For example, brushing our teeth and tying our shoes are automatic to us. We don’t have to think about it. These are just habits that we’ve established after doing them over and over again. No thought process – really – is involved.

When we are taking on new things that are NOT a habit, it’s a challenge; because we need to shift it from being something that takes some effort, time, and thought into something that becomes automatic.

That’s where we want to get to with certain things in our business; that you want to make a regular habit.

The only way to create a habit is to:

  • Do it regularly
  • Be very conscious of it
  • Put a system in place that “forces” you to do it

How to Capitalize on Your Strengths … And a Cool Resource

Today I wanted to discuss your strengths. Unfortunately most people don’t take the time to look deep into what are their strengths, natural talents, and gifts and how to use that information to move forward in their life and business.

In particular, I wanted to share with you a great resource you can use to uncover what are your biggest strengths. It is a book called Strengths Finder by Tom Rath.

What is great about the the Strengths Finder book is that after taking a test (code is within the book), it lists your top 5 strengths in order. And it explains what each strength means and how you can use that information to grow.

Another really great thing is that you can use this information to pair up with other people who have strengths in those areas that you would consider a “weakness” of yours. Combining strengths with other entrepreneurs and small business owners is a very productive and powerful strategy to elevate all parties involved!

I recently did this with a business associate of mine. My strengths of course was with online marketing and techie stuff, and hers was more offline marketing – especially in the area of networking. She is a Master Networker! Thus we felt combining our strengths – and business models – would be the best formula for achieving entrepreneur success. The end result was the Marketing with Heart & Hustle Workshop we held this past January!

How to Stay in The Loop in Your Industry

People often ask me how do they find up-to-date content and stay in the loop with their industry?

Let me just say that I don’t think  the problem is finding content. Content is everywhere! The problem is information overload and deciding where are those few select places you can go to and focus on to stay informed about current trends and news in your industry.

For example, I use sites such as Feedly.com or Topsy.com. Another great site to stay on top of what’s new in your industry is Paper.li. This service is great for aggregating the top news and article updates of those you follow on Twitter.

There are hundreds of other sites you can use to stay in the loop with your industry, but let’s not forget face to face strategies such as attending workshops and industry associations. These get-togethers can be a great source of information; this way when you go back to your clients and prospective clients you are well informed and you can communicate to them what they need to know to move forward in their life and business.

My recommendation is to stick with no more than two to three content curation sites you like; otherwise you’ll potentially risk falling into the information overload black hole. Yikes!

Don’t let your outside world dictate your inside world

Today’s phrase: Don’t let your outside world dictate your inside world.

What do I mean?

For many of us, we allow our outside circumstances to dictate how we feel inside and who we are Being.

For example, say you’re in a situation where you are struggling financially – credit card debt, not being able to pay your bills etc. So basically you are having a lot of financial stress and worry in your life … And rightfully so.

The only thing we can truly control is who we are Being and how we choose to feel inside regardless of what’s happening in our outside circumstances. So regardless of whether or not we have the income to pay our bills, or challenges in our relationships, or whatever challenges we are facing, we have a choice of how we choose to feel and BE in the world.

Don’t move until you see it …

Have you ever seen the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer? Great movie about a young child prodigy who has a natural talent for playing chess and was constantly being compared Bobby Fischer, one of the worlds’ best chess players.

There’s a scene in the movie where the coach tells the young boy who is studying chess moves, “Don’t move until you see it.”  Basically, he was telling him not to move his next chess piece until he can see all the moves necessary to win the game.

The little boy looks at the board and tells the coach, “I can’t see it.” And the coach in turn continues to tell the boy, “Don’t move until you see it. Don’t move until you see it…”

Such an amazing line and great lesson because many entrepreneurs and small business owners go about their day-to-day operations without any rhyme or reason… Without having a vision. Whether it’s an overall vision for your business or specific vision for a project, workshop, event, etc.
